TRAVEL EXPERIENCES IN LAPLAND, FINLAND AT THE END OF OCTOBER

The end of October is a period of late autumn-early winter, weather is usually a transition from autumn to winter. You can catch the cold, rainy, muddy, grey autumn or you can get winter conditions with a lot of snow and very low temperatures. 3-4 days before your travel you will find a reliable forecast about what the weather will be like while on holiday.

Autumn to winter

We spent 1 week in Rovaniemi from the 28th of October to 4th of November. One day before departure the weather got much colder in Lapland (below -10 Celsius). We had 2-3 days when snowing, about 30 cm of fresh snow altogether. The forests were wonderful, everything full of snow, and we had real winter landscapes, which were breathtaking.

Program options, experiences and travel tips

We planned trips to Kemi, Tornio, Haparanda, Rovaniemi city centre, and concerts at Korundi, Santa Claus Village, Inari, Vaattunkiköngas, and Tankavaara. Indoor programs: museums, restaurants, shopping and several outdoor activities: snowmobiling, reindeer sleigh riding, hiking, walking, hunting the Northern Lights and taking a lot of photos. We did short outdoor programs because of the cold weather (-3 - -21 Celsius). After the outdoor activities, we warmed up in the car and looked for places to eat or drink hot chocolate, tea, coffee or glögi (hot berry juice with cinnamon).

Cold weather dried our skin, so we needed to use body lotion, hand cream and lip balm. Put them on your packing list if you visit Lapland in wintertime!

If you are outside, wrap up warm, you will need sub-zero clothing.

Amazing foods, tasty meals, friendly staff and good prices in restaurants. See our next post for more details

Items in the shops (foods, drinks, cosmetics, medicines…) are rather expensive (3-4 times more expensive), compared with the prices in the UK. See our next post for more details

Driving by car is easy and comfy. See our next post for more details

People are nice and super friendly, which made our holiday fantastic

Rovaniemi is a nice city, nature is clean and amazing. Finns live in harmony with nature.

Winter activities at the end of October

The end of October-beginning of November is not a perfect period for tourists, because the autumn season has already ended and the winter season hasn`t started yet. Most of the husky farms, and reindeer farms were closed, autumn boat trips on Inari Lake were not available, and winter sports activities were not available because of the thin snow blanket. But we were lucky because it fell about 30 cm of fresh snow during the first days of our holiday, so the tour operating offices started a very early winter season at the end of October, providing their winter services (snowmobile safari, reindeer sleigh riding...). So we booked a snowmobile sprint (1 hour) at Arctic Lifestyle and tried the reindeer sleigh riding in Santa Claus Village.

Aurora hunting

For hunting and seeing the Northern Lights the best period was the end of August and September in Lapland in this season. In October the aurora borealis observations were reduced. On our holiday we got 3 sunny days followed by very cold, clear, starry nights, which was perfect for hunting. The first time we missed the aurora because we tried to grab it in Rovaniemi, walking along the river and the bridges, at the area of Ounaskoski camping. Light pollution in the city made the observation impossible for us. Next time we were smarter. We spent the whole day in Inari, driving 320 km to the north. We finished our tour in Siida at 4 in the afternoon at sunset, then came back to Rovaniemi. On our way back to Rovaniemi we took 3-4 breaks and looked at the sky on the starry and rather cold night (-16-20 Celsius). Our observation was successful, managed to see the Northern Lights, but we have to improve our photography skills…

TEIDE VOLCANO TOUR IN TENERIFE

First of February, we completed this wonderful tour by car to the car park, then by cable car to the upper station, and then on foot to the La Fortaleza viewpoint. It was a nice short walk in the sunny and chilly weather, minus 1 at the peak (24-25 Celsius on the beaches at the same time). If you plan to visit Teide volcano, 3718 m high, you can choose from several options. You can book an organized tour, even at night, in which case there is nothing special to do, the organizer will arrange everything. If you organize yourself, you can reach the free car park at an altitude of 2300 meters, where your car must be parked. You can choose to go by cable car from here, with a ticket buying at the station or buy online before travel (it is advisable to buy a ticket online in advance for the given date and time), the return ticket price is 37 EUR for 1 adult and 18.50 EUR for a child aged 3-13 (prices in 2022). From the parking lot, it is also possible to continue on a hiking trail, it is re...

FIRST TRIP TO ICELAND - ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

Since 2018 we have been frequent travellers. After discovering England, our first foreign trip was to Iceland. Despite the October weather not being too kind to us, we had a wonderful experience and fell in love with the country. We felt that we had to return. Since then it has been the only place we visit regularly, several times a year. With our experience and knowledge of the place, we try to provide useful answers to the questions of newbie travellers planning their first trip to Iceland: - where to go for the first time, - what to see, - how long to stay and when to go, - what to look out for when organising your trip, - what preparations are necessary, - what to take with you, - is it advisable to organise it yourself or should you use a travel agency? Iceland is a very safe country, with high-quality services, great hospitality and professionalism, so we can organise the tour ourselves. From home, we can book flights, select and book accommodation, car rental, buy entrance tic...

DRIVING BY CAR IN ICELAND, OUR EXPERIENCES IN AUTUMN

First visit to Iceland with a Dacia Sandero, avoiding the F-roads At the end of October 2018, we spent 5 days in Iceland for the first time and rented a Dacia Sandero from Goldcar for our day trips. We were very satisfied with the car and the rental service. The rental contains some insurance (for example Collision damage waiver (CDW), Theft waiver (TW), Third party liability protection (TP),…) but your liability is the deposit. So in any issue, you will lose the part or the full deposit, which is terrible. But if you want to sleep well you can purchase a car and hire excess insurance which can protect your deposit and cover the first part of any claim (known as the "excess"). We planned trips to Snaefellsness peninsula, Reykjanes-peninsula, Geysir-Gullfoss-Thingvellír, South Iceland (Vík, Solheimasandur, Skogafoss) and Akranes (where we rent a flat), so we drove on main roads, avoiding the F-roads, this is why we chose a smaller 2WD car which was perfect and the cheapest o...
