DRIVING BY CAR IN LAPLAND, FINLAND IN EARLY WINTERTIME

Our experiences on the roads

1. We spent 1 week in Rovaniemi from 28th October to 4th November and made some trips around Rovaniemi and to Tankavaara, Inari, Kemi, Tornio and Haparanda, using our rental car.

2. On our holiday we had to face winter road conditions as winter came early this year, snow covered everything and the temperature was below zero (-3 – 21 Celsius)

3. We could see snow machines cleaning the roads from the snow, especially on motorways and around the block of flats in Rovaniemi. The main roads were clean, but not perfectly clean. Side roads were also passable, blanketed in a carpet of snow and ice.

4. Ice and snow significantly increase the risks on roads, drive carefully in Lapland in wintertime

5. Calculating the travel time of your trips in Lapland, you have to take into account lower speed, for example on motorways the max speed limit is 100 km/h, but in wintertime, on snowy and icy roads it is not safe to reach this limit, you can drive only at 60-80 km/h

6. We had 2-3 days when snowing, about 30 cm of fresh snow altogether. In the mornings, before our day trips, we had to clean the car carefully, warm up the car and de-icing the windscreen, which took at least an extra 20 minutes

7. We rented a Volkswagen Polo from AddCar with a petrol engine and winter tyres. It was easy to drive, a good choice in wintertime

8. We were definitely satisfied with the service of AddCar, the staff was friendly, the car was in excellent condition, and easy process of picking up and dropping off the car

9. When visited Rovaniemi city centre, we used the free 24-hour public parking at 4 Poromiehentie

10. In the Revontuli shopping centre we could find free parking spaces, where payment is not needed within 2 hours while shopping

11. Every destination (hotels, restaurants, stores, museums…) has its own free car park, so you don`t have to worry about spending money on parking

12. In Rovaniemi, most of the roadside parking spaces are chargeable between 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday

13. In Rovaniemi there are a lot of cyclists on the roads even in wintertime, be careful of them

14. Finns we met on the roads followed the traffic rules, driving carefully

15. You can go anywhere from Rovaniemi, you have to face reindeer or moose walking on the roads. When you can see them, slow down and be careful, take care of them

LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER IN ICELAND - TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS 2021

How to plan our holiday in the festive period? In 2020 we spent the end of the year in Iceland and we ran into inconveniences because of being not prepared: closed stores, shortened opening hours, limited services. This year in 2021 we have carefully studied the websites of stores, supermarkets, restaurants, tour operator companies etc., sent questions and received answers about the festive opening hours and services. Now sharing our guide with those who also plan their trip to Iceland at Christmastime. Iceland, and mostly the capital, Reykjavík is a popular Christmas destination, a record number of visitors are expected, so it is necessary to plan programs on time and arrange bookings if needed. They will be open every day of the last week of 2021, reserva...

TEIDE VOLCANO TOUR IN TENERIFE

First of February, we completed this wonderful tour by car to the car park, then by cable car to the upper station, and then on foot to the La Fortaleza viewpoint. It was a nice short walk in the sunny and chilly weather, minus 1 at the peak (24-25 Celsius on the beaches at the same time). If you plan to visit Teide volcano, 3718 m high, you can choose from several options. You can book an organized tour, even at night, in which case there is nothing special to do, the organizer will arrange everything. If you organize yourself, you can reach the free car park at an altitude of 2300 meters, where your car must be parked. You can choose to go by cable car from here, with a ticket buying at the station or buy online before travel (it is advisable to buy a ticket online in advance for the given date and time), the return ticket price is 37 EUR for 1 adult and 18.50 EUR for a child aged 3-13 (prices in 2022). From the parking lot, it is also possible to continue on a hiking trail, it is re...
